... she believed the world was good and beautiful...
On an old half-forgotten bridge '
spanning a. small fair stream, gently flowing,
so gently flowing down -to the bay; there
With attention undivided I paused to meet with myself,
With feeling unrefined I paused to speak with myself,
and in speaking spoke into the depths of my being
with the soft, gentle purr of unconstrained flow.
The mossy stones and water-soaked rotting branches
as perfectly obscure in their futile obstruction
of the streams ceaseless flow
as my civilized mind and
large white body shorn of youth
is perfectly futile in these obscure regions;
These stones and branches sang harmony to my soul:
and in singing sang into the depths of my being
and in singing resonated the purr to a holy roar-I bowed down in homage.

Captain Satan: Evil?

On that bridge I paused with this heart and this mind,
over and beyond my reflected image.
Thcre I bowed with a joyful car
listening blissfully,
slowly, gathering all in.
Being the need to gather yet not needing
nor searching;
Vowing to return and fccl again soft safe days-to again and again and again stop and listen
to the sound softly singing in my soul.

Despite printing a plethora of ."important" articles
this year, the item that seems to provoke a disproportionate
amount of response, written and oral, is a small 12 square
inch comic called Satan's War, by Brian Zastoupil.
The comic seems to disturb people because the main
character, Captain Satan, kills people indiscriminately.
Some have suggested Brain seek counseling. I
submit that Brian does not need counseling, and in fact the
ones that need help are those that deny the existence of evil
by working to censor any expression of the evil that
surrounds us.
Although I do not pretend to speak for Brian (see
an interview with him on page 9), I see Satan's War as
depicting, albeit mctaphorically, a reality of evil that
surrounds us.
How can we account for all the bad things around
us if evil does not exist. In my view, evi l (and good) , can be
transcended by rising to another level. However, the existence
of a transcendent level does not preclude the existence of a
struggle between good and evil.
Enough of my babbling, below arc the views of a
Christian, a Satanist, and a Crystal Witch. As always, I
encourage you to express your views in writing and submit
them for publication.

Slasher movics, occult films, 2000 sorties per day,
Satan's War, and such give us an opportunity to nourish our
passion for violence and evil. The record of history
demonstrates this same passion.
Why does ev il exist? Class conflicts? Racism?
Sexism? Greed? Inadequate education? Poverty? No, thcse

the unpopular reason called original sin.
Our human forbearers rebelled against God and we

"And the symbol of Satan represenL~ the natural
force whieh rules the world, for the symbol of Satan
represents all human nature as it is!" --The Satanic Creed
Context is everything.
"Evil" only exists in a
specific context as a mental judgement made by one
individual human beings. For example, in the context of
protecting the earth from being destroyed by pollution, the
current cause of this "evil" is overpopulation, too damn many
people. From that perspective anything which destroys people
is "good." In that context, wars, famines and AIDS
"good." From the context of the individual human being in
that war or being starved or dying of some disease, the
destruction of his individual life is "evil."

A Crystal Witch's view
by Inanna

The nature of evil cannot possibly be explored in
such a short piece. It would be foolish to try. Humankind has
been debating this issue sinee we first began communicating
our thoughts from one to another. However, I think one of
the keY .P9ints to remember when examining this issue is that
the nature of good and evil is based on human terms. Nature
knows no evil, nor does it recognize good.
The stars, the universe cannot be narrowed down to
our categories. Beyond human existence, as we know it, there
can be no evil nor good because both are judgemental terms
applied in light of our experience as mortals living on this
world. We look to the essences that make up this force,
weaving in and throughout life, and give them names and

Evil Continued
Christian, from cover
continued.
The only means by which evil could
be overcome was by the loving self
sacrifice of God-in-the-Flesh, Jesus the
Christ, on a cross outside of Jeru~em
some 1960 years ago. Jesus' resurrection
from the dead demonsLrntes. that evil, in
the personal sense .sin, does not have the
last say over our lives.
We can participate in Jesus' victory
over sin by placing our trust in him.
Trust in Jesus affects us in three crucial
ways. First, we will know that God has
forgiven us. Second, the experience of
forgiveness allows God's peace to make
inroads into the chaos of our souls.
Third, this divine . invasion affects our
entire being, be it our literary and
aesthetic desires or our relationships with
the rest of the human race. God's peace,
relational harmony, begins to flow
through our life.
Greg Smith is the campus minister
with Evergreen Students for Christ. They
meet Tuesdays at 7 pm in CAB 108.

Satanist, from cover

-. -

The truth is, there is no universal,
all-inclusive standard of good or evil. It
always depends upon one individual ' s
judgement. Satanists have simply decided
to do their own judging instead of
'surrendering that vital responsibility · to
others, whether they wave bibles or
bayonets.
The death-worshipping religions of
the world all hold that the universe is
malevolent.
Christianity, Judaism,
Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Sikh,
and Jain proclaim that the world is evil
and a veil of tears. They teach it in
their scriptures, their churches, mosques,
and temples. They feed this poison to
generation after generation and reap the
rewards of a humanity enduring life as
hell.
Taking the view that the material
world is evil condemns all carnal
pleasures of the flesh and justifies every
pain,
torture,
and
torment ever
experienced by any being, anywhere and
in any time. "It is God's will," the
world-hating priest tells the grief-stricken
mother as she clutches the broken body
of her murdered ' child. Implied in this
view of "life is evil, death is good" is the
idea that any pleasure will be punished,
for pleasure in this world is evil to them.
Yet we Satanists do not take the
opposing view that this world is therefore

These examples of how people are
working to change their immediate
surroundings are much more realistic
when thinking in terms of individual
effort. But integration into the curricula
presents a completely different set of
problems.
There are many ways that AIDS
could become a part of Evergreen's
curriculum. An AIDS module could take
many forms.
Most feasible would be a voluntary
once-per-quarter lecture, rather than a
time-consuming weekly installment.
The question of whether such a
module should be required is again an
issue. The option of developing a module
that is a required component of all
classes has several problems.
Since

Currently, optional classes are being
offered but they aren't getting much
response. Classes like Hedgepeth's are a
start, but don't go far enough.
"It
concerns me that 11 out of 3200 students
avail themselves of that infonnation ... ,"
said Hedgepeth.
How does one teach in order to
rcach the maximum number of students
effectively?
That's the, "most fundamental

question in education," according to
Wong, and AIDS is forcing Evergreen
officials to confront it again. And it's
seemingly unanswerable. That leads me
to think that it would be more profitable
to think in terms of generations, rather
than in months--in issues and changing
environments rather than times and
people.
Those that are working in AIDS
education should continue to make their
contributions, however small, knowing
that every little bit helps in the long run.
The best contribution anybody can make
at this point is small, but significant
because it alters the way future
generations will think.

Who are "Cowboys with Attitude?"
This_ question has been ignored by
everyone for six months. Everyone exce~t
me. Due to an uncontrollable neurotic
impulse, I decided to fi~d out ~hat
makes these two strange troubadours tick.
The Cowboys, Rockslide Slim and
ElwoOd Grimes, have been performing
their unique cO!Jntry-music comedy/satire
since they arrived in Olympia from
Montana last August. They have released
an original album, Bootleg, and starred in
their own TCTV special called An Hour
With Cowboys With Attitude.
They recall the first time the~ .hit
Olympia. Slim and Elwood were ~Ittmg
beside their brand new 1958 Ford pickup,
on the side of 1-5 outside Lacey. Slim
said to Elwood, "I thought you said this
was a good truck!"
"Well, what do ya expect for $15?"
Elwood replied.
The two native Montanans found
themselves stuck in Olympia while on
their way to California. "They got
rccordin' contracts down there," said
Elwood.
I talked with the pair as !lley checked
out Evergreen's campus. Slim was
worried about the lack of spittoons.
"Don't no one here chew?" he asked.
Elwood was thonghtful. "Maybe
everyone just chokes on their food." .
Here in their adopted hometown, the
Cowboys sometimes run afoul of the
authorities. "The police don't like us and
the Mayor and his posse tried to run us
out of town, but they ain't never gonna
comprehend us," said Elwood with pride.
"Yeah," added Slim, "and a kid with
green hair told us we had red necks."
"Yer not payin' attention, Slim!" said
Elwood.
The Cowboys bring their show to
Evergreen for the first time on May 9th
in the Comer, at a Housing-sponsored
event. Later this month at the Central .
Tavern in Seattle, they open for the
Olson Brothers.
Their tongue-in-cheek act pokes fun
at the macho country and western
attitudes of Western culture. Most of their
audiences get the joke, but for some it

may hit a little too close to home. Folks,
it's all in fun.
"I Thought Our Love Was Bumin',
But It Was the Pancakes Instead," is their
most requested song these days, along
with "I Went To Heaven and Saw Elvis,"
and "Mad's-All-Inclusive-Do-It-Yourself
Country Western Song."
Elwood and Slim were puzzled when
no one invited them to the Academy of
Country Music Awards this year. Slim
feels the Kentucky Headhunters, big
winners at the awards ceremony, envy
the Cowboy's superior talent and pulled

strings to exclude CW A.
"We almost won a Grammy for
'Weirdest Dam Band We Ever Saw,' and
'Band Most Likely to Make Their
Mothers Change Their Names,'" claims
Slim.

[love... love ...love ... ]
I've got too much energy
to switch off my mind,
but not enough
to get myself organized .. ..
I can't give you up

So infect me with your love--"
SPLASH--memories
of
"]20

mind. A blindfolded man, strapped to a
chair, floating downstream, on a barge, in

Or perhaps--hear the roar of the engines?-you heard it (on the once high-flying)
KJET 1600 AM.
Do you remember? Club Broadway

about Latin American narcotic trading.
I don't remember if infected made it

"Sweet Bird of Truth" sang
premonitions about the Gulf War back
when Saddam Hussein was a beacon of
democratic hope:
"Y 'know I can almost
smell the blood
washing against the shores
Of this land that can't
forget it's past...
Oh the wind !llat carries this plane
is the wind of change,
Heaven sent & hell bent
Over the mountain tops we 'go,
just like all the other G.I. Joes ...
... We're above the Gulf of Arabia"
Bang, right on the nose. The whole
album hits me that way. Bang. Bang.
Bang. I can't sip tea and listen to this
album. Even tequila wouldn't do the
trick. This is not a nap-time album.
Infected doesn't sing the praises of a
perfect world; nor does it attempt to offer
alternatives. "Out Of The Blue (Into The
Fire)" should make me VERY ANGRY.

Is art a hammer or a mirror? Matt
Johnson is calling it a mirror; and it
doesn't do any good to scream at the
mirror. Congratulate him for portraying
what he sees as the truth.. .I say to myself
in a low voice. Meanwhile I pray that
his mirror is a warped one.
Warped mirrors and all, this tape
sears like orange juice early in the
morning.
But this is not wholesome,
fruit flavored fun; this is broken glass
underfoot and overturned garbage cans,
rubber smeared roadways and the hum of
streetlights.
.
I don't think it's EVIL, it's just
somebody's life. (Read the front page and
decide for yourself about the "evil" of the
world.) Perhaps "infected" has infected
me. Give it a listen.
Again, it rages.
RJ Nesse thanks Seth for his kind
words, and encourages all TESC musical
scrooges on campus to tell her about their
cheap finds. She'll look for them on
payday. Drop 'em off in Library 2510.
