The Academic
Program

Evergreen maintains a 20-to-1 student-tofaculty ratio and emphasizes learning in small
groups rather than large lectures. Students
develop close working relationships with faculty members, and receive credit from them by
ersonaily-written evaluations rather than lett r grades. Evergreen's versatile curriculum is
ultural values. It enables you
de oted to ·
to
dy "th an emphasis in most fields such
as bu · ess, edu ation, pre-law and pre-med,
comp e
· e and ethnic studies.
Ev
een's modes of study include full-time
pro ms; part-time courses; individual learning co t cts, where a student studies with
one faculty member; and internships, where
one can apply what one has learned in realworld job settings. Full-time programs replace
separate unrelated courses by combining a
number of subjects in the study of a central
issue or problem. Program activities may
include:
• Lectures presented by faculty teams or
guest speakers
• Seminars or group discussions among 15-20
students and one faculty member
• Laboratories
• Workshops
• Individual conferences with faculty
members
• Field trips.

4

For example, "Political Economy and Social
Change" is a full-time interdisciplinary program that shows the relationships between
history, economics, sociology, political science
and law. Other typical interdisciplinary programs include "Society and the Computer,"
"Great Books," "Native American Studies"
and "Counseling the Culturally Different."

~

Evergreen mantiene una proporci6n de 20
estudiantes por cada profesor. Hacemos
cultural y permite estudiar varias disciplinas
tales como: negocios, certificado para la
enseflaza primaria o secundaria, computadoras
privadas. Los programas academicos
reemplazan el estudio de cursos individuales
sin relaci6n el uno al otro. Estos programas
combinan varios ramos academicos para
estudiar un tema central. Las actividades del
programa pueden incluir:
• Conferencias presentadas por miembros de
la facultad u otros expertos.
• Participaci6n en reunion de estudiantes para
discutir y analizar problemas y diferentes puntas de vista.
• Ejecutar experimentos en los laboratories.
• Entrevista con los profesores.
• Excursiones.

Program as
Academlcos

Por ejemplo, "Political Economy and Social
Change" es un programa cuyo tema central
demuestra la relaci6n entre la historia, la
economia, la sociologia, la ciencia politica, y la
ley. Otros programas interdiciplinarios
incluyen "Society and the Computer;' "Native
American StudieS:' and "Counseling the
Culturally Different."

What Our Students
Say About
Evergreen ...

"I've been encouraged to investigate, evaluate and communicate.
I've been taught to do so with
precision and to exercise compassion. I've been shown that
to do so, I must trust myself, to
share who I truly am, and risk
rejection. At Evergreen I've
been pushed-to develop my intellect and my spirit."
Paul Gallegos
Santa Ana, California

"I've found that studies at
Evergreen approach things by
looking at the interconnections
between ideas. So far I've been
able to see connections between
my studies, job and personal
life that I wasn't aware existed.
In my job as a Student
Manager at Housing, I'm not
just learning theory, I'm learning office procedures,
bureaucracies and how to deal
with people."
Sheila Manalo
Oak Harbor, Washington

10

Admissions Counselor Diane Kahaumla and
student Tom Williams

"Evergreen is the only school
I've come across that enables
me to develop in my own way,
as opposed to getting expertise
in a limited area of knowledge.
It's the one school where I've
been able to study as broad an
area as social sciences from the
standpoint of history, psychology, sociology and other areasand then step out of that area,
find an internship, put together
a contract with a faculty
member and come up with a
learning experience that's
tailored to my individual
interests!'
Tom Williams
Gary, Indiana

"Before Evergreen I had never
heard of an Indian professor
and never read a book written
by an Indian. So it's been a
very moving experience to have
an Indian faculty member
standing before me, giving me
novels written by Indians,
Asians, Chicanos and Blacks.
"(Faculty Member) Yvonne
Peterson has been a real inspiration. She knows what it's
like to be an Indian in a nonIndian environment. As a faculty, as an Indian woman, she has
the ability-without letting you
know it-to empower you, to let
you believe that you have the
right answers, that you are a
leader!'
Barbara Lawrence
Suquamish, Washington
