RE:

Multi-Cultural Seminar/Planning Meeting

Hardiman, Member of the Farulty

We seem to be operating fran a cc:uple of different premises. (1) The Third
World community has repeatedly asked President Evans that a workshop on
racism on campus be held. I am simply trying to do the legwork to put it
together. (2) To me your metaphor concerning the anthropologist seems
neither appropriate nor constructive. (3) While I am not a minority nor a
Vietnam Vet nor a handicapped person, I am a member of a rather large
protected group (females) , and I have education and experience in the field
of affirmative action. (4) I am glad to have your reaction to the written
material tmder consideration. We can easily scrap it and use somethirlg else , thoogh
responses from other individuals have been. more favorable.
It seems it might be useful to have a general meeting in which to make final
agenda decisions. Other possible material includes: a survey taken by Evergreen
students on descriminaton as perceived on campus; the results of a ten-year audit
on affirmative action in employment at Evergreen; a tape or videotape of Third
World students discussing experiences with racism on campus; a faculty-led
forum on civil rights under Reagan; and a small group session led by offcampus Third World leaders . A good time to meet might be the Third World
Coaliticn meeting on Tuesday, October 27th at nom in 13205. Can you make it?
