On May 20, the Board of Trustees met with the Third World Coalition to discuss
items deemed necessary actions by the Coalition. During the Board meeting
which followed, the Trustees approved the addition to the college's organization
table of the Director of the Third World Coalition as reporting directly to the
Vice President and Provost, and expressed intention to pass at the next meeting
the following items (number identification as presented by the Coalition).
1 & 2) - dealt with Director position.
3)

"Mandate the President to oversee faculty hiring to insure faculty competence and the compliance of affirmative action goals for fiscal year
1976."

4)

"Mandate the President to oversee staff hiring to insure staff competence
and the compliance of affirmative action goals for fiscal year 1976."

5)

"Mandate the President to oversee student recruitment to insure the
student goals are reached and compliance of affirmative action goals
for fiscal year 1976."

6)

"Mandate the President to insure the establishment with funds available
for a summer orientation program for Third World students."

7)

TRUSTEES DID NOT ACT ON THIS ITEM WHICH READS: Mandate the Vice President
and Provost to take immediate steps to insure that all recommendations
of the Non-White DTF report are implemented.

8)

"Direct the Academic Deans to supervise program planning in order to
guarantee that programs are designed specifically for Third World people."

9)

"Direct the Academic Deans to supervise program planning in order to
guarantee that all programs incorporate the Third World in their design."

10)

"Instruct the President to oversee the hiring process of the Director of
Development, Director of Computer Services, and Nurse Practitioner II to
insure competence and equal opportunity for Third World candidates."

11)

"Direct the President to see that all final candidates for the aforementioned positions are aware of, and able to serve, Third World people."

12)

"Act immediately to seat, as ex-officio members of the Board of Trustees,
a member of the Third World campus community, member of the student body,
a member of the faculty and a member of the staff."

13)

"Mandate the President to set up monthly meetings to monitor progress
for Third World people and to discuss further recommendations."

On the back side of this memo, I've reproduced a copy of my letter to our Trustees
regarding item 12.

DEJ...R TRUSTEES ~

As we discussed at our last Board meeting, I will be circulating the
list of necessary action items brought to the Board by the Third
World Coalition, with an indication of the Board's intention to adept
them.
I foresee problems arising from the item dealing with faculty, student
and staff ~epresentation at the Board table. With special interest
groups (such as the Third World Coalition), as such, sitting at the
table~ where would the Board draw the line when other special interest
groups demand the same recognition?
In keeping with the spirit of the item, and to avoid the above problem,
I'd like to suggest something like this:
"Act immediately to seat at the Board of Trustees' table, a
member of the student body, a member of the faculty, and a
member of the staff, at least one of whom is to be non-white."
