James M. Sahlstrand, (1936-2009) was a photographer and Emeritus Professor of Art at Central Washington University, Sahlstrand was nationally recognized as a photographer, publisher, teacher, gallery director and originator of the pioneering national photography exhibition "New Photographics". He received BA and MFA degrees from the University of Minnesota where he worked with Jerry Liebling.
Between the years 1971 and 1986, New Photographics showcased the work of nationally recognized artists of the period, as well as younger unknown artists. This exhibition was an immensely important contribution to the ongoing conversation in photographic arts, as it supported newer directions in photography concurrent with the flowering of the Conceptual Art movement. The exhibition was regularly reviewed in west coast art publications such as Art Week as well as prestigious national publications, and gained national recognition for the Sarah Spurgeon Art Gallery at Central Washington University. "New Photographics" was a tremendous influence to many young photographers of the era.
James Sahlstrand exhibited his photographs widely at institutions such as the University of New Mexico, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Art Museum. Permanent collections include the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the George Eastman House. Sahlstrand remained director of the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery from 1972 until his retirement in 2004, where he presented a diverse schedule of regional, national, and international exhibitions. In 1978 he founded Roslyn Special Edition where he published and sold limited edition prints of nationally recognized photographers including Brett Weston and Clarence John Laughlin.
