Recreating his childhood experience of family road trips and the images a young Steve Fitch would build while his father’s Buick speeded down highways, the American photographer has specialized in the exploration of the American highway and its roadside attractions. Just as Jack Kerouac in On The Road, Steve Fitch celebrates the cultural spirit of driving landscapes with his very own road trips, eager to photograph what he calls ‘the vernacular of the journey.’ Thus from glowing neon signs to motels, the photographer not only captures emblems of an automobile society but also those of the American way of life with its clichéd references to the Wild West. With his mastering of artificial lights and diffuse dusks, Steve Fitch navigates between kitsch, a fantastic Lynch-like intensity and the angst of a Hitchcockian film.
