Artist Bio
Karen Truax is an American photographer who was active in 1970s. She is known for her hand-colored black and white photographs. She received her BFA from Arizona State University in 1974 and her MA from the University of New Mexico in 1975. Truax taught photography at the University of New Mexico and later at the University of California, Los Angeles were she was part of an active and experimental community of artists including her colleague, Robert Heinecken. Truax’s work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions since the mid 1970’s, including the canonic Attidtudes: Photography of the 1970’s curated by Fred Parker and Photographic Directions: LA 1979. Truax’s photographs are in the collection of the Los Angeles County Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Yale University Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Center for Creative Photography among others.
