Artist Bio
-
Doug Wadden studied both photography and design, first at the Rochester Institute of Technology and then receiving his graduate degree from Yale University in 1970. He initially experimented with printmaking and video before turning his attention exclusively to visual communication design.
As a graphic designer he has worked for museums, corporations, public agencies and institutions, but perhaps most notably as the principal design consultant to the Henry Art Gallery for 25 years.
His books, catalogues, posters and publications have been recognized internationally in exhibitions, competitions and publications and are in the permanent collections of NY MoMA, the Library of Congress in Washington DC and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. As an educator, he has been chair of design at the University of Washington in Seattle, teaches design history and professional practice and is currently the Marsha and Jay Glazer Endowed University Professor. He has sought to balance teaching with practice and theory with creativity, whether in the classroom or the studio.
He has been on the national boards of the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York and the American Center for Design in Chicago and has been a juror, panellist and lecturer at numerous competitions and design conferences.
In 1998 he was elected a member of the Alliance Graphique Inernationale in Zurich, Switzerland and has since participated in numerous congresses, publications and exhibitions including "Graphic Design Since 1950" published in 2007 by Thames and Hudson, London and in 2012 in "One by One" by Hesign Publishers, Berlin.
