Artist Bio
Stephen Hazel (1935-2012) was an American print artist and educator, who lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest.

Stephen was a major figure in the Northwest art community. Few artists contributed so much to the understanding and appreciation of works on paper, especially original prints. His artwork was exhibited internationally and collected by major museums including the Museum of Modern Art (N.Y.), The Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. Hazel’s special gift was a willingness to share his wealth of knowledge about the making and printing of original prints and the unique qualities of the handmade papers they involved. He was frequently invited to teach or to be an artist in residence. He thrived in collaborative situations with fellow artists. Perhaps Hazel’s crowning contribution was the experimental workshop devoted to art on paper, += studio blu =+, he established with his wife and fellow artist Kathleen Rabel. Through += studio blu += he mentored many artists and introduced them to the expressive possibilities of committing their image-making to paper. Sam Davidson, Owner & Director of Seattle’s Davidson Galleries, exhibited the artist’s work over a period spanning almost forty years. Stephen Hazel leaves a rich legacy of powerful mark-making forever impressed upon the print community.
