The Academic
Program

Evergreen maintains a 20-to-1 student-tofaculty ratio and emphasizes learning in small
groups rather than large lecture& Students
develop close working relationships with faculty members, and receive credit from them by
personally-written evaluations rather than letter grade& Evergreen's versatile curriculum is
devoted to intercultural value& It enables you
to study with an emphasis in most fields such
as business, education, pre-law and pre-med,
computer science and ethnic studies_
Evergreen's modes of study include full-time
programs; part-time courses; individual learning contracts, where a student studies with
one faculty member; and internships, where
one can apply what one has learned in "real
world" job setting& Full-time programs
replace separate unrelated courses by combining a number of subjects in the study of a
central issue or problem_ Program activities
may include:
Lectures presented by faculty teams or guest
speakers
Seminars or group discussions among 15-20
students and one faculty member
Laboratories
Workshops
Individual conferences with faculty members
Field trips
For example, "Political Economy and Social
Change" is a full-time interdisciplinary program that shows the relationships between
history, economics, sociology, political science
and law_ Other typical interdisciplinary programs include "Society and the Computer;'
"Great Books;' "Native American StudieS:'
and "Counseling the Culturally Different!'

Evergreen mantiene una proporci6n de 20
estudiantes por cada profesor. Hacemos
ensefiaza primaria o secundaria, computadoras
privadas. Los programas academicos
reemplazan el estudio de cursos individuales
sin relaci6n el uno al otro. Estos programas
combinan varios ramos academicos para
estudiar un tema central. Las actividades del
programa pueden incluir:
Conferencias presentadas por miembros de la
facultad u otros expertos.
Participaci6n en reunion de estudiantes para
discutir y analizar problemas y diferentes pun·
tos de vista.
Ejecutar experimentos en los laboratorios.
Entrevista con los profesores.
Excursiones.

Programas
Academlcos

Por ejemplo, "Political Economy and Social
Change" es un programa cuyo tema central
demuestra la relaci6n entre la historia, la
economia, la sociologia, la ciencia politica, y la
ley. Otros programas interdiciplinarios
incluyen "Society and the Computer;' "Native
American Studies;' and "Counseling the
Culturally Different!'

Admissions
(206) 866-6000
ext. 6170

Freshman
Normally, any graduate in the upper half of
the graduating class of an accredited high
school will be considered for admission. If
their rank is not available, applicants will be
considered individually.
If you are not in the upper half of your
class, you will need to show evidence of your
ability to succeed at Evergreen by submitting
test scores, letters of recommendation and
other data as requested by the Admissions Office. Commonly submitted test scores include
the Washington Pre-College Test, Scholastic
Aptitude Test or American College Test.
Transfer Stud-ents
If you are a transfer student, you will be con-

sidered for admission if you made satisfactory
progress at your previous college and left in
good academic standing. Applicants from other
institutions who have completed 45 or more
quarter hours of college-level credit (or the
equivalent), need not submit high school
transcripts or test scores. Those who have
completed less than 45 quarter hours must
submit high school transcripts as well as college transcripts.
General Educational Development Tests
Applications will be accepted from persons 18
or older who have not graduated from an accredited high school, but have completed the
General Educational Development (GED) tests.
Normally, GED test scores should be at the
60th percentile or above in all categories.
Application Deadlines
Evergreen has a "rolling admissions" process.
This means that the college reviews applications as they are completed (when official
transcripts are received for evaluation) and
will return decisions within a few weeks. The
college may stop accepting applications if
enrollment limits are reached. It is to your advantage to consider the following guidelines
when applying:
December 1
Fall Quarter, 1988
Winter and Spring Quarter, 1988 February 1
Admission to The Evergreen 'State College
is granted without regard to race, color,
national origin, sex or physical challenge.

What Our Students
Say About
Evergreen .. .

"I've been encouraged to investigate, evaluate and communicate.
I've been taught to do so with
precision and to exercise compassion. I've been shown that
to do so, I must trust myself, to
share who I truly am, and risk
rejection. At Evergreen I've
been pushed-to develop my intellect and my spirit:'
Paul G•llegos
S•nt• An•, C•llfornl•
Gr•du•tlon Speech, 1986

"I've found that studies at
Evergreen approach things by
looking at the interconnections
between ideas. So far I've been
able to see connections between
my studies, job and personal
life that I wasn't aware existed.
In my job as a Student
Manager at Housing, I'm not
just learning theory, I'm learn·
ing office procedures,
bureaucracies and how to deal
with people:'
Shell• M•n•lo
O•k H•rbor, W•shlngton

10

Adml••lon• Coun•elor Diane Kahaumla and
•tudent Tom William•

"Evergreen is the only school
I've come across that enables
me to develop in my own way,
as opposed to getting expertise
in a limited area of knowledge.
It's the one school where I've
been able to study as broad an
area as social sciences from the
standpoint of history, psychology, sociology and other areasand then step out of that area,
find an internship, put together
a contract with a faculty
member and come up with a
learning experience that's
tailored to my individual
interests!'
Tom William•
Gary, Indiana

"Before Evergreen I had never
heard of an Indian professor
and never read a book written
by an Indian. So it's been a
very moving experience to have
an Indian faculty member
standing before me, giving me
novels written by Indians,
Asians, Chicanos and Blacks.
"(Faculty Member) Yvonne
Peterson has been a real inspiration. She knows what it's
like to be an Indian in a nonIndian environment. As a faculty, as an Indian woman, she has
the ability-without letting you
know it-to empower you, to let
you believe that you have the
right answers, that you are a
leader."
