Hazel Underwood
Taholah, Grays Harbor County
"Hazel Underwood of Taholah grew up on the Skokomish Reservation near Shelton. She learned traditional Native American basket making by watching her mother, despite the fact that her mother declined to teach her directly. She used to make cedar-bark baskets, but has been unable to obtain a consistent supply of raw materials in recent years. Today she specialized in sewn cattail and beargrass (raffia) baskets, which are sold to collectors."
