interviews Pete Steilberg, assistant athletic director
and cross country coach.
While newspapers across the Northwest picked up the
wire story about Evergreen's selection as one of the
"10 Best," reporters and photographers from the Seattle Times, Jacoma News Tribune and the Everett Daily
Herald came down to see for themselves. Here, Seattle

"Here it is: the public school that is masquerading as
a private one," begins Lisa Birnbach's section on
Evergreen in the Parade magazine article. She goes on
at greater length about Geoduck U. in Lisa Birnbach's
College Book, her analyses of 186 out of the approximately 3,000 colleges and universities in the nation.
Out of the ten colleges Birnbach chose, Evergreen is
the only public institution and the only one in the
Northwest. With estimated expenses of $3477 in-state
and $5946 out of state, Evergreen is far and away the
most inexpensive college to attend in the Parade top
ten, followed by $6320 for Morehead College in
Atlanta. Georgia, and then Beloit College of Wisconsin with a not-so-close $9644.
]
Echoing the sentiments of many on campus, Acting
President Richard Schwartz thought the media attention "reaffirms the recognition we felt we've deserved
over the years. It's nice the message is coming home
to Washington." The message came home for real
this fall, as Evergreen enrollment recorded an alltime high headcount of 2826 students on campus as
compared with 2717 last year. For a while, students,
faculty and staff paraded to the Office of College
Relations for free copies of the Birnbach feature and
other press clippings (copies are still available by calling 866-6000, ext. 6128 or writing College Relations,
Library 3114, The Evergreen State College 98505).
"My Dad wasn't too sure about me coming here,"
said one freshman as she picked up her copy, "but he
called from Texas last night when he saw the Parade
article to tell me I must have been right after all!"

As in other things, Evergreen has
proved to be a spawning ground for its
own special breed of independent, selfemployed business people. Weaned
from secondary schools to the real
world through the crucible of critical
thinking, intensive collaboration and
rigorous interdisciplinary studies,
Geoduck graduates cut through the
chaff to the quick of success in unique
and effective ways.
Lynda Barry '79
Among other things, Dr. Lynda J.
Barry goes to singles bars to research
the patterns of people's love lives.
Lynda Barry releases those and other
disturbing comic results of love in
monthly cartoons for Esquire and for a
weekly strip syndicated in 15 cities nationwide. The Real Comet Press in
Seattle is publishing her latest book,
Naked Ladies, Naked Ladies, this month.
Did Barry's entrepreneurial success
start at Evergreen? First she studied the
history of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages, the history of science, and
then she settled into painting. Her first
editor was Matt Groening '77 (now an
L.A.-based cartoonist). He recalls
"Lynda would come visit me while I
was working on the school paper, and
we would sit around and draw little cartoons and pass them to each other. Hers
were so funny that I asked if we could
publish some. They were one-shot
single frame things, very whimsical, absurd and silly."
The single frames grew into panels,
and her comics went from the CPJ to
the University of Washington Daily, to
the Seattle Sun to The Chicago Reader and,
eventually, to Esquire.
Of the latter, Barry says, "I think
'How could my work ever be in Esquire?
In this magazine that says 'Man At His
Best' right underneath the title?' But if
there's any group of people that I'd like
to have reading my work, it's the group
who reads Esquire. I think they tend to
be men who are in controlling positions, and the ideas in my work are
good things for them to know about."
Barry doles out those ideas in her
work on a qualitative, rather than a
quantitative, basis. She resists lucrative
offers to turn out a daily strip because
"it can get so bad so fast."
Sounds like Barry can count on success for some time to come.

Tim Moffatt is the proprietor of Young
Alaska Publishing Company out of Anchorage, Alaska, which just released its
first book: How to Get Plenty of Fish in
Alaska. They will specialize in children's
books. Tim lays claim to be being the
first registered student at Evergreen, the
fifth student employee of the Library,
and the 35th staff employee of the
Library.
Ott runs his own chemical manufacturing business on Vashon Island, producing rare natural toxins for use in
biochemical research. Previously he
operated on a consignment basis, consigning his products to another firm for
marketing, but about a year ago he set
up his own business, Natural Products
Company, in a passive solar structure.
He also does technical writing in scientific publications.

"Satellite Kitchens" is a Christmas
catalog project of products made by artists in the Olympia area. Several
Evergreen graduates, students and artists are teaming up to produce the
catalog, which will be available in midNovember. A small percentage of every
order will go to covering the cost of producing "Satellite Kitchens," the rest
will go to the artists. "Satellite Kitchens" can be ordered at Box 1033,
Olympia, Washington 98507.
Russell Bataglia '81
Bruce Pavitt '81
Bataglia and Pavitt started Fallout
Records last June in Seattle's Capitol
Hill district. They specialize in independently produced rock 'n' roll,
African pop and imports from Europe.
They also have started a record label,
Bombshelter, which released a 12" E.P.
by Seattle's top underground band, the
U-Men. Future plans include a record
by an all-female Japanese pop group
called Shonen Knife.
Peter Lesser '81
Lesser resides in Olympia and owns a
business named Pacific Soyfoods, which
manufactures and distributes soybean
products. Top of the line at Pacific
Soyfoods is an item called "Soysage," a
flavorful, high-protein, high-fiber food
that can be used many different ways.
Sold on the West Coast and in Alaska
and Hawaii as well as distributed nationally, Pacific Soyfoods also operates a
mobile restaurant called the Traveling
Deli at fairs and markets during the
summer.

Pamela James '80
Bruce Clifton '80
Clifton and James operate an egg
business, not a hen and egg business,
but making and marketing beautifully
designed and decorated eggs. Their
business began as an emergency
stopgap one year around Christmas and
grew in size and production. Their
products were featured in Seventeen
magazine in 1984, and House Beautiful is
currently working with them on a
future story. James and Clifton have
made custom-designed eggs for Ricardo
Montalban, Hal Prince, Jack Gilford,
and other celebrities. Usually duck eggs
with a handpainted design, the eggs are
available with a message that pulls out
and rewinds inside the shell. James and
Clifton have employed numerous
Evergreen students in their operation.
James is the designer and Clifton works
at the various other jobs that need
doing.
Bruce E. Franklin 75
Now a partner in Land Resource
Strategies, Inc., and Architects Diversified, Inc., (both in Sarasota, Florida),
Franklin graduated from Evergreen and
then started a building design firm in
Olympia with Bill Knauss, a former
Evergreen faculty member. Franklin
went on to UCLA for a master's degree
in architecture. He has served as a program director for the mayor's committee in greater Los Angeles and assisted
in implementing a community development and rescue program for old
railroad stations in the area.
Tim Girvin '75
Another Evergreen alum to emerge as a
successful artist in Seattle is Lynda
Barry's ex-classmate, calligrapher and
designer Tim Girvin. The two had a
drawing class together and Girvin says
"Lynda's amazing, very talented."
He has a lot of good things to say
about his education at Evergreen as
well.
He says "I owe a lot to that college. I
was able to aggressively force a specific
direction in design for myself there. I
learned to accept compromises in my
learning, which eventually meant I
broadened, rather than narrowed my
knowledge. I got a complete and
classical understanding of design
through the history of art, language and
thought, and through writing as a basis
for exploring design. I went to Evergreen to work at finding alternative
ways to solve design problems. I called
going to school there 'work.' Among
other things, I read 300 books a year
and consequently developed a great
relationship with the librarians."
Today Girvin works in his own design
firm, Tim Girvin Designs, Inc., which
employs ten people in a studio on
Western Avenue. The firm started out
in 1977 designing local projects and is
now engaged in over 100 projects at any
given time. Their workload ranges from
specialized lettering treatments and
typographic design to visual campaigns
for films including Country, The Hunger
and Once Upon a Time in America to
packaging, corporate identity and print
collateral for clients such as Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom's, Westin Motels,
Alfa Romeo, International Aero
Engines and Estee Lauder. Girvin's
firm has also done major promotional
design in Canada and Europe and he is
looking forward to developing business
in Japan as well. As the Seattle Weekly
put it recently, "Tim Girvin continues
to be one of Seattle's hottest graphic
designers."

John Ernst '78
Barbara Brundage '81
Mead studied filmmaking at Evergreen,
but upon graduation discovered he
didn't want to do that professionally.
Deciding he needed to learn on a job,
he took up a career with Camera, Etc.,
in Washington, California and Utah.
Then Mead moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where he operated MotoFoto, a
door-to-door photofinishing service, for
a short time, and then to Olympia
where he opened a juice bar known as
The Lunchbox. That operation expanded to become the Herb & Onion and
then the Urban Onion as it is today.
Lydia Garrett is a full-time foreign
language teacher at an Olympia area
high school, as well as the operator of
"Swiss Hike," a summer tour of
Switzerland. Swiss Hike is in its second
year of business and seems to be wellreceived by the public. Lydia studied in
Zurich and worked several years in a
multilingual setting in Europe. At
Evergreen, she studied with faculty
member Andrew Hanfman and obtained her teacher's certificate.
Ernst owns and operates Valley Light
Center, Valley Lights Publications and
a professional secretarial and errand
service called "My Secretary" out of
Oak View, California. The Valley Light
Center is a non-profit religious
organization established in 1981. Ernst's
book, "Sadhana in Our Daily Lives: A
Handbook for the Awakening of the
Spiritual Self," was written during his
final year at Evergreen.
Barbara Brundage and her husband
own a bed and breakfast guest house in
Olympia called Puget View Guest
House. Located near Tolmie State Park,
they offer a two-bedroom cottage for
their guests.
Robert "Hank" Holzer '77
Hank Holzer studied environmental
chemistry at Evergreen, but after five
years of lab work, he made a career
change. His love of woodworking led
him to set up a furniture-designing
business. Working from his home in the
Montlake District of Seattle, he produces fine quality furniture, and
although his financial remuneration is
relatively low, he feels gratification from
the feeling of control he has of his life
and the creative level of his work.

Search Homing in on New President
After an intensive process that began
last summer, Evergreen's Presidential
Search Committee has narrowed down
the field of candidates and is on
schedule for the Board of Trustees to
name a new president in December.
Nearly 200 applications were screened
during August and September by the
11-member committee, which then cut
the field to eight semi-finalists—all
"outstanding prospects' 2 —in midOctober.
Faculty member Ken Dolbeare, who
serves as chairman of the Search Committee, reported "each candidate has
very substantial campus experience, a
distinguished record of commitment to
creative academic excellence and
multicultural values, and glowing
evaluations from a wide variety of
sources."
Search Committee member Jim VVussler, a staff utility worker, burned plenty of midnight oil while
reviewing nearly 200 applications for Evergreen's
presidency. Other Committee members are faculty
members Ken Dolbeare (chair), Betty Estes, and
Byron Youtz; staff members Arnaldo Rodriguez, Sue
Washburn, and Jim Wussler; Trustees Thelma
Jackson and George Mante; community representative Justice James Dolliver; student Mike Marsh;
and alumna Julie Grant. Rodriguez, Youtz, Mante,
Dolliver and Grant all served on the first Search
Committee.
Off-campus interviews further reduced the field to three finalists,
who were named at the end of October—just after press time for the
Evergreen ReView. Those candidates and
their spouses will be invited to campus
for a two-day visit in early November.
Each candidate will meet with staff,
faculty, students, alumni and community members, and will also give a public
presentation on higher education or the
liberal arts and answer questions from
the Evergreen community.
"The task is for the whole Evergreen
community to convince the finalists that
our college presents a unique challenge
and opportunity for them," Dolbeare
said. "I hope every candidate leaves this
campus feeling she or he wants this job.
Interested alums, parents and friends
are encouraged to address questions
and suggestions to Cheryl Huggins,
administrative secretary for the Search
Committee, at (206)866-6000,

Alumni Reception
Held in D.C.
Forty people attended a reception for
Evergreeners in the Vandenburg Room
of the U.S. Capitol Building in
Washington, D.C. on October 2. In
honor of D.C.-area alums and parents of
current and former students, the reception was hosted by former Evergreen
President and now-U.S. Senator Daniel
J. Evans and his wife, Nancy, and
Evergreen Board of Trustee members
Thelma Jackson and George Mante,
who were in town for a meeting of the
Association of Governing Boards. Arrangements were made by Alumni
Coordinator Ellie Dornan with Irene
Winter of Evans' staff and a group of
alumni—Gretchen Sorensen, Maria
Tsu-Fong Tsao, Anne Avery, John
Beauchamp and Nancy Parkes—who
hope to arrange another event early
next year. If you'd like to be kept
abreast of alumni events in the
Washington, D.C. area, contact Maria
Tsu-Fong Tsao at (202) 224-3635.

Director of Computer Services Ron
Woodbury recently announced
Evergreen's first discount purchase plan
for microcomputers. The agreement is
with Dave Byers for the Sanyo product
line at his Computer Centers store in
downtown Olympia.
"The plan provides a highly IBMcompatible, easy-to-use computer to
meet the needs of most students, staff
and faculty at a lower price than a
Commodore 64," says Woodbury.
It also provides another dividend for
receiving an Evergreen degree, as the
plan includes alumni.
While the Sanyo machines do not run
all IBM software and are somewhat
slower than the best Zenith and IBM
machines, they use the standard 8086
chip, are 16-bit, MS-DOS, 128 K
machines, and with 80-column, fullscreen editing, and do "almost anything
anyone could want to do with word processing," says Evergreen faculty
member Greg Weeks, the campus's first
Sanyo purchaser and president
presumptive of the Evergreen Sanyo
Club.
The Computer Center's plan is for
several different packages, providing
one or two single or double-sided,
double-density disk drives, with six different printers from basic dot matrix to
letter quality. The basic package includes WordStar 3.3 and EasyWriter 1.3
word-processing packages, the CalcStar
spreadsheet, and Sanyo BASIC; one
single-sided, double-density disk drive;
and the Legend, an 80-character-persecond printer, all for $1142. The top-ofthe-line package includes mail merge
and data base management software
from either Micropro or Information
Unlimited Software, two double-sided,
double-density disk drives, and the
Silver Reed letter quality printer for
$1780.
Byers adds that when he has sold 25
machines, he will permanently lower
the price by 5% as well as rebate 5% to
the purchasers of those first 25.

Alumni Association President, Scott Baker, explains
the many hats he's worn throughout his life.
Board Elects
Baker
The Alumni Association Board elected
Scott Baker of Olympia to serve a oneyear term as president during their annual meeting at the Alumni Reunion.
Baker will head a cabinet that includes Meg Imrie, Redondo, first vice
president; Chris Nelson, Olympia, second vice president; Barbara Graf,
Olympia, treasurer; Linda Wynne,
Olympia, secretary, and Julie Grant,
Olympia, past president, who will serve
on the Alumni Board as an ex-officio
member.
Elected to their first terms on the
board were Bob Davis, Seattle; Ursula
Harvey, Vancouver; Steven Miller,
Olympia; Christina Koons, Olympia;
Brian Murphy, Olympia; Nancie
Payne, Olympia; Claudia Shobert,
Vancouver; Linda Wynne, Olympia,
Myrna Zolyomi, Olympia; and
Dolores Zschomler, Vancouver. Reelected to second terms on the board
were Scott Baker, Rob Fellows, Lynne
Garner and Mike Hall.
Continuing members include Mary
Bergstrom, Ken Balsley, Richard
Bever, Nina Carter, Barbara Graf,
Keith Goehner, Meg Imrie, Richard
Kelly, Chris Nelson, and Carlton
Tucker.
The new board is planning a
weekend retreat at Alderbrook in
November.
The weatherman was decidely uncooperative for the Alumni Reunion
held on campus, October 5-7. He was
unable, however, to dampen the enthusiasm of over 100 alumni who
returned to Evergreen to renew old
friendships and to enjoy the many activities planned for them by the Alumni
Association.
The Reunion began with a Friday
evening reception and entertainment
provided by alumna Meg Imrie and her
flute ensemble, "Windsong." The
premiere of the second annual Alumni
Art Exhibit in Gallery 4 brought out
more than 80 alums, faculty, staff and
students to view the work of Laura
Wessel '79, Larry Mix '82, Michael
Jenkins '78, Tucker Petertil '81,
Judith Smith '72, Corine Landrieu
'84, Petrina Walker '78, Kelly Stevens
'81, Mariko Marrs '83, Conni Strope
'79, Judy Kir '84, Stephen Smith '74,
Joe Tougas '89 and Ross Matteson '80.
Festivities began at high noon on
Saturday with lunch and a welcome address by Acting President Richard
Schwartz and an update on the
presidential search by Search chairman
and faculty member Ken Dolbeare. At
the annual homecoming soccer games,
the Evergreen men "whupped" Trinity
Western of Langley, B.C., while the
women lost by a hair to the University
of Portland.
The annual business meeting
featured a brief report by outgoing
Alumni Association President Julie
Grant on the past year's highlights, including alum participation in Super
Saturday, successful chicken sales at
Olympia's annual Lakefair celebration,
continued support of the Student
Lunch Program, the Alumni Mentors
Program, and two very successful alumni social events in Seattle.
Five workshops following the annual
meeting proved popular. Long-time
faculty member Rudy Martin led a
group discussion on Knowledge for
What?, a book by Robert S. Lynd.
Alumni Scott Baker '77 and Doug
King '77 told their group everything
about small business from an Evergreener point-of-view. The balance of
the afternoon took on a political tone
when Joe Dear '76 guided his participants in a discussion of the
Washington state economy, John
Calambokidis '79 helped his group examine avenues for citizen action, and
alum board member Dick Bever '80
answered questions about the Association's Political Action Committee.
When the bar threw open its doors on
Saturday evening, an eager crowd
bellied up to sample Reunion '84's official batch of Geoduck Sludge. From
the ensuing sips and smiles, it was obvious sludgemaker Keith Goehner '78
had served the perfect punch.
After steak dinner, Sue Washburn,
Evergreen's director of College Relations and Development and the evening's emcee, brought down the house
with several anecdotes about herself and
Provost Patrick Hill (who wasn't there
to defend himself.) Guest speaker
George Earner '73, Thurston County
Commissioner, reminisced about getting around campus through a sea of
mud.
The highlight of the evening occurred
when the Alumni Association presented
a special plaque to Larry Stenberg,
dean of Student and Enrollment Services, in honor of his dedication to the
college and the positive impact he has
had on almost every student who came
to Evergreen. On a one-year leave of
absence that began October 1, Stenberg
is now traveling around the country in
his new motorhome.
Reunion activities concluded with a
Saturday night dance to the rhythms of
The Jazz Workshop led by Evergreen
graduate Laroi Carter '77. All agreed
the weekend was a wonderful opportunity to get together and have a good
time.

Alumni Mentors
Program Begins
Second Season to
Rave Reviews
4
Some 80 new Evergreen students
crowded CAB 110 for a fun evening of
bingo, popcorn and cider during Orientation Week in September. Led by
alums Mary Bergstrom, Jerry
McLaughlin, Cheryl Beckman, Steve
Hunter and Corey Meador, this first
Alumni Association-sponsored event of
the academic year began with lots of enthusiasm from both the students and
alums. Cries of "Bingo!" bounced
around the room and alums kept busy
awarding prizes.
"We scoured the Westside for plenty
of great prizes," Alumni Coordinator
Ellie Dornan revealed. "But according
to the students," she confided, "the best
prizes of all were donated by our very
own bookstore manager, Denis Snyder."
The Alumni Mentors program began
last year to help new students adjust to
Evergreen and college life in general.
The new program was adopted by the
Alumni Association, who sponsored
three events for last year's new students:
a panel discussion and social hour at
the beginning of the school year, a selfevaluation coaching session at the end
of Fall Quarter and a pizza and bowling
night during Winter Quarter to
alleviate "cabin fever." Alums were
delighted with student participation at
the events.
"We need new ideas that interest
students," Dornan says, "We want
students to feel comfortable here and so
they can learn what we alums know—
that Evergreen is a great place to get an
education." She urges interested
graduates to get involved by contacting
her in Library 3103 or at 866-6000, ext.

By Keith Eisner, Information Specialist
Visiting faculty member Ken-ichi Yasumuro
Space and initiative are two of the most
striking aspects of Ken-ichi Yasumuro's
first impressions of America. The
visiting professor from Kobe University
of Commerce in Kobe, Japan, still
sounds a little awed when he talks about
stepping off the plane in Seattle this
August.
"So much space," he says. "It's very
remarkable—there is so much clean
and open space and it's so very
beautiful."
Yasumuro is also inspired by the
wide-open style of Evergreen students.
In Japan, students are waiting to be
taught," he says. "They're not aggressive about learning. Japanese professors also discourage autonomy, but
here there is much more equality
between students and teachers."
The 37-year-old son of a Yokahama
factory manager has been a life-long
student of international business and
trade. Yasumuro's articles on the subject
include a study of "Political List
Management," an examination of the
relation of business and commerce to
social and political environments.
Presently he's sharing that knowledge
with students in Evergreen's Graduate
Program in Public Administration.
Winter Quarter, he'll teach undergraduates on the relationships between
Japanese and U.S. business styles.
Yasumuro is fascinated by the
similarities and contrasts between
Japanese and American industry and
commerce. Like the U.S., he relates,
Japan's heavy "smoke-stack" industries
have suffered in the past tew years, being replaced in supremacy by electronics and computers. Ironically,
Japanese economists are concerned
with the dumping of cheaper Korean
and Taiwanese goods on their markets,
in much the same way that American
manufacturers have been concerned
about Japanese products.
Yasumuro shakes his head when
asked about U.S. and Japanese trade
imbalances. "It's not good right now.
One possible resolution is for continued
Japanese investment in American companies. Five years ago most Japanese investors were interested in Southeast
Asia, but now we see a lot of investing
in the U.S., especially in California and
other sunbelt industries. Maybe in the
next decade this move will help the
balance of payments."
When not studying and teaching,
Yasumuro enjoys taking his six-year-old
daughter, four-year-old son and wife
Hisayo on trips around the Northwest.
During the week, his daughter attends
McLane elementary school, his son attends Driftwood Daycare Center and
his wife studies English composition at
South Puget Sound Community
College.
"People have been very kind and
helpful," Yasumuro says, smiling. "My
children are making friends and so am
I. It is an exciting time."
Athletic Program Welcomes New Coaches
Late Breaking
Sports News
The men's soccer team has put together
an outstanding record this fall. At press
time, Coach Arno Zoske's booters were
coming off a 1-0 home victory over the
University of Puget Sound, bringing
their record to 8-2-5 for the year. The
women's soccer team has fared less well
as they stand at 2-13-1 for the season,
even though Coach Tamar Chotzen's
troops dropped their last three games by
scores of only 2-0, 2-0 and 2-1. The men
will be shooting for a big time upset
when they play the University of
Washington's Soccerdogs—currently
the best team in the Northwest and
No. 8 nationally—in Seattle on
November 4. Evergreen's young sailing
team finished in the middle of the pack
in their first two regattas, then grabbed
a resounding victory by winning nine of
13 races at the Lewis and Clark Regatta
in Portland; while Coach Pete
Steilberg's cross country team has been
improving personal times and team
finishes weekly as they build toward the
NAIA District Championships at
Pacific Lutheran University on
November 3.
Freshman Tom Boatright pushes the ball upfield
against Willamette of Salem, Oregon. Evergreen
eventually lost the contest, 2-1. Photo by student
Steve Schaefer.
Two new coaches are already hard at it
this fall. Janet Welch, who served as
assistant coach of the sailing team last
year, is now the head coach, while
Bruce Fletcher is the new coach of the
swim team and Aquatics Coordinator of
the Rec Center pool.
An '82 Evergreen alumna, Welch led
a sailing team with only four returning
members into their first action at the
University of Washington and returned
with a fifth place finish in a field of 10
and a third place for the A team.
"We simply won't be a very experienced team," says Welch, "but as a
new coach it's exciting to start fresh
with a whole new batch of people."
Fletcher is a Capital High School of
Olympia graduate who returns to his
hometown from a position as assistant
swim coach at Central Washington
University, which sent 26 swimmers to
nationals last year. Under his guidance,
Evergreen's swimmers are already practicing twice a day. As a collegiate swimmer, Fletcher participated in the National Championships three years in a
row, but there's more to coaching for
him than qualifying for nationals.
"My goal as coach is to help each
swimmer improve," Fletcher says. "I
encourage team members to set personal goals which are realistic and
reachable. That way, as they progress,
they'll feel good about the work they're
doing."
Welch echoed a similar concern for
her sailors' self-worth: "Being on a
team provides a person with a sense of
continuity and facilitates making
friendships. It makes being a student a
little easier."
Swim meets begin in earnest after the
first of the year, while sailing competition started in October and continues
right through winter and spring.

Foundation Fund-Raising Sets New
Record in '83-84
By John Gallagher, Associate Director of
Development
The Evergreen State College enjoyed a
fantastic year during 1983-84. All of the
super publicity described elsewhere in
this issue, real progress by Geoduck
athletic teams, highly successful theater
productions, and breathtaking shows in
the Evergreen galleries set the pace for a
banner year. In keeping with this upbeat
tempo, Evergreen also enjoyed its bestever fund-raising year. The Evergreen
State College Foundation, the fundraising arm of the college, received a
record total of $281,994 in gifts during
1983-84, a 25% increase over 1982-83.
Evergreen supporters have now increased the amount given to the college in
each of the last five years. Support improved in virtually every area.
Highlights of the year include:
••An 8.3% growth above 1982-83 in the
Annual Fund, which provides scholarship and special project support to
Evergreen's students, and reached
$76,971 in 1983-84, an Annual Fund
record.

The Milieu of the
Fighting Geoduck
By Cath Johnson, Sports Information Director
From September to May on almost any
weekend you can find the Fighting
Geoducks squaring off against one of
their Northwest opponents, be it the
Loggers, the Lutes, the Bucs or even a
Saint or two.
As a member of the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA), Evergreen competes in District
I, a large playground comprised of 14
schools that span three states and a
Canadian province.
NAIA schools vary widely both in
size of enrollment and in the scope of
their athletic programs. Evergreen's
crosstown rival, St. Martin's College,
has an enrollment of 550 and competes
intercollegiately in only two sports;
whereas Simon Fraser in British Columbia has around 12,000 students and
offers nine sports for men and seven for
women at the intercollegiate level.
There are different alignments within
District I for almost every sport which
can be confusing. In men's soccer, for
instance, District I is divided into a
North Division of Simon Fraser,
Western Washington, Seattle University
and UPS, and a South Division of
Whitman, Whitworth, Pacific Lutheran
and Evergreen. Winners of the North
and South play each other for the
District title. In women's soccer,
however, all the District teams compete
in one big group.
Despite their differences, these
schools all play by the same rules and,
by virtue of their membership in the
NAIA, they all share the belief that
students are students first and athletes
second.

"There are a number of reasons we
joined the NAIA," explains Jan
Lambertz, Evergreen's director of
Recreation and Athletics. "The primary
reason, however, is that the guiding
philosophies of the organization are in
keeping with the spirit of athletics, the
values of the college's social contract,
and the code of ethics here at
Evergreen."
The NAIA is a democratic organization truly run by its membership. Each
institution is guaranteed a vote at the
national convention, and the NAIA has
embraced women as equal partners in
decision making as well as competition.
Most recently, the NAIA took steps to
protect student athletes from abuse by
stating their rights and responsibilities.
"By being a member of the NAIA,"
Lambertz says, "we can provide our
student athletes with the opportunity to
compete at the highest level while maintaining their primary function as college students."
Two Breeds of
Geoducks
The ReVicw compares Evergreen's
Mascot to its real world cousin, the
everyday Gweduc of the Mud Bay.
When the going gets tough, Gweducs
dig in, but Evergreen Geoducks aren't
afraid to stick their necks out.

The "buzzing" oi" reporters grew exceptionally loud
one September afternoon when a helicopter from
KOMO TV of Seattle landed in the field behind the
Seminar Building and reporter Mike Nesteroff popped out to do a feature story on Evergreen's reactions
to the Birnbach story in Parade for KOMO's evening
news.
