specific

especially
onesrelatingto
protests
andassociated
ideas.Thisledusto the Disorientation
Manuals,
a veryconcreteandestablished
example
of studentvoice.Whileworkingtogetheronourzine
page,wethoughtit wasimportantto highlightsomeof thetopicsthatEPIC
covered
in the manuals.
Fromourexperiences
asstudents,
webelievethatit is importantthat
thestudentvoiceis raisedhigherbecause
wearetheonespayingthemoneyto goto
thisinstitution,
wedeserve
to havea voice.Wethinkthatit is importantasacollective
voicethatwearetheonesmostheardandlistenedto regarding
thingsthathappen
oncampus,
especially
withsomeof the unfairpoliciesandhistories
thatEvergreen
has.Ouropinionsshouldbebetterrepresented
in thecommunity.

lookingin thearchives
I foundvariousstudentgroupsbutcame
across
a specific
studentcollective
on campus
calledthe Farmworker
JusticeSolidarity
Collective.
In myzine,I usedarchivalmaterialfroma previousEvergreen
student's
zinethathadtextandimagesof theircollective
protesting
outsideof Costco
& BayviewThriftway
in solidaritywithfarmworker
strikeshappening
in WAatthetime.I also
usedpersonal
archivalimagesof mydadwhenhewasabout17,afreshimmigrant
herein theU.S.pizcando
manzana
(pickingapples).
In myzineI wantedto highlight
myfatherasoneof thefarmworkers
thisstudentgrouphasbeenhelpingto advocate
for.I'mthedaughterof farmworkers
andtheexploitation
of thoseworkers
hasalways
weighedheavilyon me.It meanta lotto seea formerlyactivestudentcollective
here
oncampus
thatwasadvocating
andconnecting
withcommunity
groups/unions
to
helpfarmworkers

studentgroups.Especially
astheofficelooksdifferentandoffersdifferentservices

Alongwithnewspaper

donethathelpedOlympiaminoritycommunities
aswell.
These
werethe materials
I chosetohighlightin myzinebecause
of howcollaboratively
theWomenof ColorCoalition
joineditsworkwithothers,notjustontheshoulders
of
oneleader.
Thecoalitionstrivedto helpanyoneandeveryone
withinthecommunity
byprovidingresources
thatmadeit possible
for othersto allowthemselves

thatleavesusin thepresentfeelingdisconnected.
Thearchival
materialweusedto traceathrough-line
wascentered
in studentvoiceandoral
historyStudentradicals
shapedmuchof thecampus
cultureandpassed
ona lot of
theschool's
oralhistory.
Asthesecommunities
shrinkandarerepressed
thehistorical
andculturalgapisfelt harder.Sakofeltthisdisconnect
ontheirfirstdaysof Evergreen
wheretheyattended
a rallyagainstthepoliceandfeelingthattherewassomuch
historybeingmissed
thatcontextualized
the rally.Thisfeelingandexperience

The
Zinepagedesignencompasses
boththepositiveandnegative
aspects
of LGBTO+
activityon campus,
whetherit isthestudentsandGayCenter
fightingto hirea pro-gay
professor
in the 1970'sor a painfulreminderof homophobia
duringtheGayFilm
Festival.

artists,wesharedafeelingof wantingto breakoutof thiscycleof liminalityandloss.

I feelthatourquestion
bringsawareness
to howsomeof thestudentshavebeensilencedovertheyearsand

howtheyriseup usingart.It alsoleavespeoplewonderinghowtheirvoicescould
bevisibleto theschoolandexposes
howthecampus
treatsthem.Wewerehoping
to stopthesilences
andexpose
all of theproblems
wehaveasa community
soit can
leadto healingandgrowth.Thatiswhywecameupwiththeideato adda picture
frame:to letthereadermaketheirownartandto possiblyuseit asa wayto gettheir
voicesheard.Wehadalmostanabstract
designwhenit cameto thefirstpage,leaving
thefeelingsandunderstandings
of it upfor interpretation.
Thiscouldpossibly
show
howweinterpretthesmallest
thingsandempathize
or relatewithit,justdueto the
simplestthingslikedesign.Wehighlightedseveral
thingsin thezinesuchasphotos

Thiswasfroman
ideathatif studentart/voices
arehiddensomuch,we'regoingto expose

andputourownonthiszine.Thistopicwasinspiredbythefactthatweareall from
differentbackgrounds
andwepartakein artin someformor another.
Thiscreated
a
combined
viewpointof onesubjectthat,in myopinion,makesa verypowerfulstatementandhasa strong'callto action.'
