Financial Aid and Placement Counselors William L. Smith of

Shelton and Gail

E. Martin of Olympia have been promoted to Director of Financial Aid and Coordinator
of Placement, respectively, at The Evergreen State College, it was announced today by
Larry Stenberg, Dean of Student Development Programs.
Smith and Mrs. Martin will assume their new positions immediately, replacing Lester
W. Eldridge who held both posts prior to recently becoming Assistant to the President at
Evergreen.
As Director of Financial Aid, Smith, a native of Shelton, will supervise the award
of all federal, state, and college student aid funds; direct acquisition of and reporting
on the funds; and supervise counseling efforts regarping the use of aid funds, including
student personal money management.
Mrs. Martin will supervise the activities of the College Career Placement Office,
including follow-up and evaluation work for all graduates, development of job opportunities
for Evergreen seniors, and counseling and instructing seniors in job search techniques.
In announcing the new assignments, Stenberg said, "Both Smith and Mrs. Martin have
proven their ability to take on increasing responsibility and have done excellent jobs
here working with students, faculty, and staff."
Smith, a 1963 graduate of Shelton High School, received his bachelor of arts degree
in sociology from St. Martin's College in 1960 and did graduate studies in sociology
at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.
He was an officer and counselor at Washington Corrections Center at Shelton from 1969
to 1971 and for the next year served as a guidance counselor for the Hood Canal School
District in Mason County.

He joined Evergreen as a financial aid and placement counselor in

Smith is a member and Chairman of the Skokomish Indian Tribal Council, Chairman of
the Economic Development Committee of the Skokomish Indian Reservation, and a member of th~
Board of Directors of Small Tribes Organization of Western Washington

(STOWW).

Mrs. Martin received a bachelor's degree in English Education from Central Washington
State College in 1965 and a master's degree in English from Washington State University
in 1969.
She taught at Port Angeles High School for one year, was a lecturer in English
at Central Washington State College for a year, served as a teacher at the Yakima Indian
Reservation, and was a teaching assistant at Washington State University from 1965 to 1967.
After serving as Secretary/Coordinator

for WSU's High School Equivalency Program for

a year, she became an instructor at Centralia College in 1970.

She joined Evergreen in

1971 as a member of the faculty in the Learning Resources Center and for the last year
has been a Financial Aid and Placement Counselor,
