Alumni Board members Mike Hall and George Schroeder discuss the merits (?) of
the Reunion's now infamous Geoduck Sludge.

Oct. 9 Reunion Focuses on
"Zen and the Art of
Geoduck Maintenance"

Max Whipps, '81, and Mary Potegal are joined in matrimony during the festivities at Super Saturday last June 5. The Rev.
Howard Caesar is conducting the ceremony, while faculty member Earle McNeil at left (behind Caesar) and Ms. Potegal's
daughter, Hilde, at right are standing up for the bride and groom.

Maxwell and Mary United in Super Wedding
Just a few strangers stopped
by. Someone tried to peddle
free kittens. And, the bride's
eight-year-old son thought he
was waiting for a helicopter
ride, rather than attending a
significant ceremony.
Other than those few
distractions, the wedding of
Evergreen graduate Maxwell
Whipps and Mary Potegal
was without interruption—
despite the fact it was conducted in the midst of Evergreen's Super Saturday
celebration attended by more
than 20,000 persons on
June 5.
"It was wonderful fun,"
the bridegroom reports.
"Many of our guests had
never been to a Super Saturday celebration before—and
they loved it. Their children
had lots to do and we staged
the reception all over
campus, with a few stops at
the Beer Garden. We all
enjoyed the festivities and
were delighted we had
chosen that day and setting
in which to be married."

The decision to do so
got started, as you might
suspect, as a joke.
Maxwell was determined
to have his former faculty
member and close friend
Earle McNeil serve as his
best man. After the date was
set for June 5, the wedding
participants realized their
date conflicted with Evergreen's annual spring celebration for which McNeil was
cochair of the arts and crafts
activities. Someone with
tongue firmly stuck in cheek
suggested having the wedding as part of the festivities.
"The more we thought
about it, the better it
sounded," reports Maxwell.
"As a former military man
who spent three years attending Evergreen, I'd come to
view it as part of my extended
family anyway. To my surprise, Mary really liked the
idea too, so we went for it."
Seventy friends—and a
few strangers—gathered outside the Seminar Building
that afternoon. The helicopter

rides stopped for an hour
while the Reverend Howard
Caeser of Olympia's Unity
Church led the ceremony
uniting Maxwell and Mary.
"Mary's son was puzzled
by it all," laughs Maxwell.
"He thought we were quietly
waiting for a helicopter
ride—and didn't realize until
we told him that we had just
gotten married."
Now settled just outside
of Olympia, Maxwell, who
graduated in 1981 with
studies in counseling
psychology, is working as a
volunteer at the Army Community Service Center in Fort
Lewis, while Mary, a graduate of Ripon College in
Wisconsin, works as a substitute teacher and a parttime bookkeeper.
Both have received what
he calls "lots of feedback"
on their unusual wedding. "It
was a perfect setting," he
concludes. "We felt it
beautifully matched the spirit
in which we viewed our
marriage."

If the end of summer
symbolizes the birth of the
blues for you, your Alumni
Association has just the
cure—the 1982 Alumni
Reunion scheduled for Saturday, October 9, at Evergreen.
Irreverently called "Zen
and the Art of Geoduck
Maintenance" or alternately
"Self Help in the '80s," this
multi-faceted, day-long
festivity promises something
for everyone—from speeches
to movies, workshops to
elections, soccer games to
dancing.
Former President Charles
McCann will welcome alums
to campus with a timely
greeting Saturday morning,
followed by a stimulating
address by an as yet unselected keynote speaker and
the Alumni Association
business meeting at which
bylaw changes may be considered, new board members
elected, and membership
news and views shared.
Afternoon activities will
offer alums a chance to gain
practical advice on everything
from home energy systems

to career planning, stress
management to health care.
Or, the more athletically
inclined can enjoy Geoduck
soccer competition while
they munch a lunch prepared
by the intercollegiate
athletics program.
The now infamous
Geoduck Sludge will enrich
(or endanger) later afternoon
happy hours, complemented
with "top of the campus"
dining on the fourth floor of
the library and a budgetfitting film festival which
carries an admission fee of a
mere 25*.
Festivities conclude
Saturday night with dancing
to music by a top-name
Seattle band.
More, up-to-the-minute
details and registration forms
for Reunion '82 will be in
your mailbox soon. An overnight housing referral service
will be available for out-oftowners and car pools from
Seattle will also be arranged.
For complete information, call or write the Alumni
Office.

Board Nominations Open
Would you like to get more
involved in the Alumni
Association? Why not run for
a position on the Board of
Directors?
The Nominations Committee is currently soliciting .
nominations for 12 positions,
most of which run for two
years, though some one-year
terms are available to fill
vacancies caused by
resignations.
Board members attend
four quarterly business meetings, participate in a fall
retreat to plan the year's
activities, and are expected
to be active members on at
least one of the following
committees: Programs,
Communications, Admissions, Membership, Legislative Relations, or Financial
Affairs.

Nominations may only
be made by Alumni Association members, and should be
submitted in writing by
September 15 to the Nomina:
tions Committee, c/o Alumni
Office, The Evergreen State
College, Olympia, WA 98505.
Elections will take place on
October 9, during the annual
business meeting at the
reunion.
If you don't have time to
serve on the Board, please
consider joining one of the
committees. No election is
necessary; just volunteer
some of your time to barbeque chicken, lobby a legislator, write an article for the
AlumNews, etc.
Call the Alumni office,
and El lie will connect you
with the appropriate committee chair.

Labor Day traditionally
signals a three-day weekend,
kids returning to school, and
the end of summer. Add to
these a new tradition—Alumni barbequed chicken at
Olympia's Harbor Fair.
September 4 and 5, we'll
be hawking our delicious
chicken among arts and
crafts booths during the
Harbor Fair festival, at Olympia's waterfront Percival Park.
We hope to make this year's
chicken sale even more
profitable than last year's.
And—you guessed it—we
need volunteers to work the
alumni booth.
More than 30 volunteers
worked at the June Super
Saturday chicken barbeque,
where we cleared $543 for the
Alumni Association. July
saw stalwart alumni volunteers take the barbeque show
to Tenino's Oregon Trail Days
festival, where we sold more
savory fowl.
At Harbor Fair, we're
looking forward to clear
skies, teams of enthusiastic
volunteers, and flocks of
chicken sales. If you're able
to volunteer for a three-hour
shift, please contact Ellie in
the Alumni Office at 866-6566.
See you at Harbor Fair!

College members are reaching out to alumni all over the
country to establish a strong
national network of Evergreeners. Why? Because the
college needs your involvement in order to survive and
thrive.
Evergreen is experiencing
the same decline in enrollment as are colleges and
universities all over the
nation. However, the Washington state legislature has
said that Evergreen must
grow in order to remain
essential in a time when
legislators are exploring

hundreds of expense-cutting
and revenue-producing
options. In fact, a few legislators even proposed that
Evergreen be closed!
Your help is needed in
the following areas:
—Participating in high school
college nights and academic fairs
—Organizing receptions for
prospective students and
their parents
—Contacting state legislators
and federal officials
—Organizing alumni gatherings in your area

—Raising funds for scho
ships, library and art
acquisitions, student a
faculty research, and o
areas which are being
back or eliminated due
budget reductions.
—Sponsoring and/or sup
vising new internships
—Sharing job informatior
with new graduates.
