Saturday , February l Oth , 10:00 a .m. in th e
Board of Trustees room, third floor of the
Library. This meeting i s open to th<?
pub li c and the agenda will inclu de a
repor·: by the Interagency Advisory Task
Force to the Commission on their v1ork in
com1:1unities throughout the state. There
wil l be a potluck lun cheon at noon on the
4th f"loor of the Library, i,Jith the meet ing
resuming at 1: 00 p.~.
In the evening, th ere wil l be a Mex ican
da nce at 9 :00 p.m. on the 4th floor of the
.brary, featuring Ray Tavares y Los Mex icanos. Mixers and i ce will be ava il able
if you bring your own beverages. This

Cumbuka has had roles in the film "t·1andinqo"
und the te l ev i sion program "Roots." There
will be a drar.wtic read ing of "For My
People" by TESC student Renee Bershell and
Africa n dancers will be brought onto ca~pJS
to perform ; probab ly at noon.

by membe rs of Ujamaa Society. James Matthews
will be giving a workshop on black political
econ omics. The l ect ures and workshop will
occur the same day and foll ow one anoth er.
Black Arts West out of Seattle will be bring i ng the i r l ates t production to Evergreen
entitled, "\·Je Are t·1 any People . " It is a
coreo-poetry play and has seven black 1"-Jor-:pn

Interested Third World students and staff
have been meeting to discuss ideas of
work ing to gether on a spring event. The
discussion has led the students to the
conclusion that what was most important
1-1a s to educate themse lves regarding TESC.
Many comp laints ha ve been voiced regarding the lack of rel eva nt curriculum and
faculty that are sensitive to their
needs.
We have decided to meet every other 1-1ee k
beg inning Wednesday, Febru ary 7th at noon
in the Third Worl d Coalition Boa rd room,

"AMERICAN INDIAN DAYS". It wi 11 be happening March 5th through the 8th in Lecture

Therefore, our idea of a jointly sponsored spring event has instead evolved
into a series of workshops open to all
Third World peo ple. We are only in the
beginning st age s and would like yo ur input. A survey is being planned to poll
your interests and concerns. Please take
some time to respond to it and ma il i t
back or drop it by Library 3204 dur in g
office hours. This will be mailed to
you when completed.
The first workshop date is tentative for
February and will be exploring the process of faculty hirin q and curriculum
development and acce~tance. This is to
aid us in impa cting that process.
The second workshop will be learning to
design relevant curriculum for Third
World people. Other wor kshop ide as are
Grant Writin g, Basic Affirmative Action
Laws, Career Planning, Resume Writing,
etc.
Along the lines of somethin g festive,
another commu nity potluck is bein 0 requested as well as a graduation banquet.

Tuesday at noon, beginning February 6th

MEDIA MODULE UPDATE:
The T1ird World Media module, taught by
lativ·= Hawaiian - Pila Laronel, is pro gressing. The class of eleven Third vJorld
students meets every ~Jednesday evening at
the color television studio. The class has
lready completed videot ap ing a presenta tion of Raf ic Bey on January llth and is
now in the process of tapi ng a one act play,
"S1'1amp DvJellers" by \tJole Soyinka. They
\vi ll also be videotaping the flexi can Dance,
February lOth, sponsored by MECHA and covering the activities of UMOJA Month for
Ujamaa .

In 1974, Marroquin fled Mexico to escape
persecution and has been seeking political
asylum in the United States. The Innnigra·tion and Natura li zat ion Servies ( INS) have
recently denied his request for asy lum,
based on a State Department recommendation that claimed political repression
does not exist in Mexico . Marroquin now
faces deportation hearings and both money
and statements of support are urgent l y
needed. If deported, he would face
imprisonment, torture, and possible death
at the hands of the Mexican authorities .
TESC's MECHA supports Marroquin's
struggle as well as Nat i 6nal Education
Association (NEA), Rep . John Conyers,
Joan Baez, Gloria Ste inem, Angela Davis,
