The Longhouse Project

'

Upon the recommendation of Provost Youtz and Vice President Schwartz., I am pleased to
recommend and request your approval of the concept that a. traditional Indian Longhouse
be designed and built on our campus for the primary use of the educational program of
the college. It is·our belief that such a Longhouse will substantially further our
longstanding efforts to provide the finest possible Native American educational
program and to provide a cultural center for the .enrichment of the education of all
Evergreen students.
I .

It is understood at the outset that this facility will be a regular part of the
campus, not separated from it, and will be subject to the jurisdiction of the
President and the Board of Trustees as are all other campus facilities. In particular, this building will be supported and schedul~d as are· other academic spaces on
campus except that, because of the special cultural significance of the Longhouse,
\__)only appropriate activities will be scheduled there ·. Operating costs of ·the facility
are to be provided outside of the academic budget so that they do not drain the
support budgets of · the other academic programs of the college.
The college will make available some time of .the college architect during the summer
to assist with the design and the satisfaction of state building codes. The two proposed sites should both be explored in the preparation of the second stage, cr program
document phase, of the proposal for further administrative and Board review.
Capital funding sources outside the state capital budget should be explored as soon
as the design study is sufficiently advanced to allow cost estimates to be made.
I therefore recommend that you pass the following
the Board:

resol~tion

at the June meeting of

'Resolved that the Board of Trustees of The Evergreen State
College endorses in principle the concept of a traditional
Indian Longhouse on the campus for the primary use of the
academic program of the college. Such Longhouse is to be
an integral part of the campus and subject to the regular
policies of the college as set by the President and the Board
of Trustees. The college, through the campus architect, will
give support to the architectural design, in order to bring
the second stage, or program document phase, of the proposal
foward for review by the administration and the Board some
time in the fall of 1982.
