BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES BUDGET AND ELECTS NEW OFFICERS
At their Wednesday, July 10 meeting, Evergreen's Board of Trustees unanimously
approved President Joseph Olanderss recommendations for the 1985-8? biennium
budget. The reconmended^.'2f~reduGtions totaled $1,417,000 and resulted in a 22.47
FTE (full-time employment) reduction.
The subtotals of reductions by division are: Provost's area (including direct
instruction, academic administration, the Library and Educational Support
Programs)-$477,000; the areas reporting to Vice President for Business-$753,000;
Student Services-$106,000; and College Relations and Development-$69,000.
Olander reports that, "The 1985-87 budget will produce a $200,000 reserve to
fund unexpected costs and to be used as a hedge for inflation or a cushion
should the economy not support projected state revenues."
Director of Personnel Rita _Cooper says that the 22 positions affected by the
budget reduction will result in five employees leaving the college. The rest of
the employees affected will either be transferred to other positions, will have
altered duties, work on reduced contracts, or have their positions transferred to
capital funds.
In other Board action, the Trustees elected William T. Robinson as chairman
for 1985-86. Robinson, a Seattle attorney, succeeds Tacoma attorney Herb Gelman
who has just completed his second term as chairman. Thelma Jackson, a Lacey businesswoman and former Board chairman, was elected vice-chairman, while Richard S.
Page, who heads the Washington Roundtable, will serve as the Board's secretary.
VICE PRESIDENT TO LEAVE CAMPUS
President Olander announced that he has accepted the resignation of Vice President
for Business Richard JSf. Schwartz, effective August 1.
Schwartz has been at Evergreen since 1980 and served as Acting President for
a year-and-a-half during the search that resulted in the hiring of Olander. He
will continue to work for the college as an executive assistant on special projects during the transition period following August 1. Schwartz also plans to
begin work on the completion of his doctoral dissertation on "The Political
Implications of the City of Detroit's Infrastructure Deterioration."
President Olander will announce the appointment of an interim vice president
for business and the selection of a search committee to find a replacement for
Schwartz this month.
"My hope is to have someone aboard as soon as possible," Olander says,
"because Evergreen is entering a period of reform in college business procedures
that are both necessary and desirable."
EVERGREEN'S NEW AFFIRMATIVE ACTION OFFICER WILL "CELEBRATE THE DIFFERENCES"
Margarita Mendoza de Sugiyama has been named the new Affirmative Action Officer at
Evergreen, effective September 1. Sugiyama, who is currently an administrative
assistant to the dean of student special services at Boise State University in
Idaho, will be Special Assistant to the President (Affirmative Action).
Sugiyama, who earned a B.S. from Washington State University and an M.A. from
Whitworth College, has also worked as a Civil Rights Investigator for the Idaho
Human Rights Commission and was appointed by the governor to the Idaho Commission
on Women's Programs.
"I'm very excited about her coming here," said President Olander. "I look for
Ms. Sugiyama to bring an effective and organized approach to the celebration of
differences and diversity at Evergreen." Sugiyama will also be assigned to other
special projects as needed under the direction of the president's office.
STILSON NAMED EMERITUS LIBRARIAN
Loud applause greeted the Board of Trustees announcement on Wednesday, July 10,
that Reference Librarian Malcolm Stilson will be granted the title of Emeritus
Librarian upon his retirement on August 30. Stilson, who has served the college
since 1970, will volunteer two days a week to the Evergreen Library beginning
October 1. Congratulations, Malcolm!
